In an extraordinary fusion of modern ingenuity and ancient tradition, a master blacksmith has transformed a humble crowbar into a real Kusanagi Japanese sword. The Kusanagi, legendary for its mythical powers in Japanese folklore, is one of the country’s Three Sacred Treasures. While the modern sword lacks supernatural abilities, its creation is a testament to the precision, skill, and artistry of traditional Japanese swordmaking.
Forging this sword from a crowbar begins with heating and flattening the hardened steel. The crowbar, initially a crude tool, undergoes a rigorous process of folding and forging—reminiscent of the traditional tamahagane steel used in katana-making. This removes impurities, strengthens the steel, and gives the sword its balance of flexibility and sharpness. The blacksmith then shapes the blade, applying a clay coating for the signature hamon (temper line) and quenching it in water to harden the edge.
